FOR KIDS: Halloween Safety

As night falls on Halloween, thousands of local children take to the streets. While the little ones focus on costumes and candy, their parents should focus on safety.

The Central Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross urges families to remember these “lucky seven” rules for a safe and happy Halloween.

Tips for Trick-or-Treaters

  1. Plan your trick-or-treat route ahead of time. Stick to familiar neighborhoods and streets, preferably those with wide sidewalks.
  2. Cross streets only at corners. Never try to beat oncoming traffic. The candy will wait!
  3. Wear light-colored or reflective costumes and clothing. This helps motorists spot trick-or-treaters. For added safety, carry flashlights and glow sticks.
  4. Choose face paint instead of masks. Ill-fitting masks with narrow eye slits can obscure and impair a child’s vision, thereby increasing the risk of slips and trips.
  5. When approaching a home, keep away from open fires and candles. Costume material can be extremely flammable!
  6. Only visit homes that have the porch light on. And only accept treats at the door; never enter a home.
  7. Have an adult inspect all treats. Don't consume candy if the package is already opened. Remember: Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.
